Fracking is a process in which holes are drilled into the earth, and then a combination of water and sand are pumped into the underground shale rock at high pressure.

This mixture fractures (or “fracks”) the rock and forces out gas which is contained in it. This gas then rises to the top of the drilled holes and is captured.
