What is Blue Monday?

What and when is Blue Monday and who decided what day it is?

"Blue Monday" is a term invented as a tongue-in-cheek exercise by Dr Cliff Arnall in 2005, and supposedly is the day in the year when various factors combine to make people miserable. They include

  • weather
  • debt levels
  • distance from pay day
  • time since Christmas, and other factors.

It is supposedly governed by an formula but Dr Arnall does not claim scientific validity. It is used as an excuse by many restaurants to give offers to customers, purporting to cheer them up.
