What did the Uber boss say to one of his drivers?
Uber founder Kalanick, 40, a controversial figure after a number of recent incidents, was filmed in heated discussion with one of his drivers, Fawzi Kamel. After a video of the event was published by Bloomberg, he apologised, saying he was ashamed of his behaviour.
This is a transcript of their conversation.
KAMEL: You’re raising the standards but you’re dropping the prices.
KALANICK: We’re not dropping the prices on black
KAMEL: But in general
KALANICK: We have to - we have competitors, otherwise we’d go out of business
KAMEL: Competitors man, you have the business model in your hands, you could have the prices you want but you choose to buy everybody a ride
KALANICK: You’re misunderstanding. We started… we didn’t go low-end because we wanted to, we went low-end because we had to
KAMEL: It’s a piece of cake right here
KALANICK: It seems like a piece of cake because I’ve beaten them. But if I didn’t do the things I did, we would have been beaten, I promise.
KAMEL: We could go higher and more expensive
KALANICK: So here’s the thing. We could do lots from San Francisco… I have guys working on lots, which would be 50-75% more expensive than black
KAMEL: But people are not trusting you any more. Do you think people will buy cars any more unless we buy them through Europe and invoice otherwise nobody want to buy cars. I lost $97,000 because of you. I’m bankrupt because of you…You keep changing every day.
KALANICK: Hold on a second… what have I changed about black?
KAMEL: You changed the whole business.
KAMEL: You dropped the prices…
KALANICK: On black?
KAMEL: Yes… we started with $20
KAMEL: We started with $20… How much is the mile now? $2.75?
KALANICK: You know what?
KALANICK: Some people don’t like to take responsibility for their own…
KAMEL: But why you sending email for Town Car?
KALANICK: … and blame everything in life on somebody else. Good luck!
Kalanick leaves car
KAMEL: Good luck to you too - but I know you’re not going to go far
Kalanick slams door
