What is World Book and Copyright Day?

World Book Day was started by UN charity UNESCO in 1995 - it includes Copyright as something to mark, saying the day marks

"the power of books to nurture creativity and advance dialogue between women and men of all cultures". It includes Copyright, it says, because: "By championing copyright and open access, UNESCO stands up for creativity, diversity and equal access to knowledge.

In many countries the day celebrated on 23 April (to mark the birthdays of both Shakespeare and Cervantes) but in the UK it's on the first Thursday of March.
