Ed Sheeran has broken a record by having nine out of the Top 10 songs in the UK. This has happened because the charts now count the number of plays on streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, whereas previously they only counted purchases of physical records or downloads. This week his third album, called "÷", was streamed 73,906,189 times on Spotify alone. The Top 40 compiler, the Official Charts Company, counts 150 streams as the equivalent of one purchase. But by including plays of tracks on an album in a singles chart, the goalposts have been moved.
