What is the state of the opinion polls in Scotland about wanting a second referendum on independence from the UK?

It's close, but no.

Leading poll expert Professor John Curtice told the BBC that most polls in Scotland on the question of whether there should be a second referendum "within the next couple of years" were:

  • Around half saying there should not be, and
  • Between a third and two-fifths saying there should.

It's possible though that as the implications of Brexit unfold that that situation would change. A referendum could only take place with the backing of the Scottish Parliament and, crucially, the UK Parliament in Westminster.
