What is the cost of sending a child to a private, or independent, or public school in the UK?

A survey in 2015 found that the average cost of sending a child to a private (or independent or "public" school) was £13,194 a year for "day" pupils, ie those who live at home, and £30,369 for boarders. This figure rises sharply for top private schools - a sixth form place at Roedean reportedly costs £37,200 a year.
